National Geographic Adventure, Gourmet, and Buddhadharma
Posted by Dave on May 6th, 2007
Paul, the original TravMonkey, tagged me to share the magazines I read. Without further ado…
1. National Geographic Adventure - I’ve been subscribed to this magazine for a little more than a year now. I tried to get myself to cancel it given my upcoming travels, however as those last mailings urged me to renew for the low price of $10/year, I couldn’t help but think about all the amazing adventure stories I’d read over the past 12 issues (thus I renewed). Sure, the snippets about vacation packages are priced far beyond most people’s means, as are a lot of the cool gear they feature, however the adventurers and expeditions they highlight are fantastic. In addition, reading through the magazine gives me a bit of knowledge about more subversive forms of travel occurring around the globe, such as the Tribewanted project. Who knows, maybe I’ll be a featured writer for them one day!
2. Gourmet - I’m in my third year of this subscription. I think I picked up a copy at the grocery store after seeing a tempting recipe, and never looked back. Despite the fancy name, each issue includes a variety of recipes which can take ten minutes to an entire afternoon to prepare. As I started cooking more, I also began to snap photos of my creations. Unfortunately, most were with my grainy camera phone. Now that I have a digital camera, I’m cooking less. Go figure!
3. Buddhadharma - This pricey, quarterly publication keeps some good ideas in front of me when I’m between books (which can be months at a time). I’m on my second year with it. I’ve saved my past four issues, so if anyone is interested, I’ll send them to you for free (if you live in the continental US). Leave a comment or use my Advertise / Contact page.
Honorable Mentions from the past: Mens Health (many years), Maxim (I dropped IQ points “reading” this one), Playboy, Thrasher (skateboarding), Rolling Stone, Sports Illustated, and Skiing.
Dare I ask what Mike of Vagabondish, Boris at Travel-Junkie, and super-editor Ian at Brave New Traveler like to read offline?
Dare Me to do something fun, weird, or challenging on the road!

we had a dual Nat Geo Traveller and Nat Geo Adventure subscription that we let lapse about a month ago. We found they were coming in and we were not really reading them, and yeah resubbing was super low but we didnt pick it back up.
My dad subscribed us to…. “Arizona Highways” which is actually really cool. Its kinda like the blue ridge mountain outdoor sports store mag type thing without the adds etc and more magaziny.. Its actually pretty cool. Great photos, its all glossy.
I used to buy the odd 2600 magazine and some odd IT mags, lots of mountain biking mags (from the uk since the usa mtb mags suck arse so bad its not funny). Mags cost a lot. We dont buy mags anymore
[…] at GoBackpacking.com was kind enough to tag me with a new meme asking what I’m reading offline. It’s a short list that, oddly enough, doesn’t include anything travel related. […]
Thanks for tagging me on this one, Dave. I love National Geographic too, though I can’t claim to read it regularly. Funny story: out of the blue, my grandmother started receiving NG in the mail over twenty years ago. And she’s had a free “subscription” ever since. She doesn’t get any bills or renewal notices - they just keep sending them to her. You’d think after two decades, someone would’ve picked up on it. Not sure what that has to do with anything, but …
