Thailand is a great place for a first trip. The language barrier wasn't an issue in the islands and Bangkok. I mean taxi drivers and hotel staff might not speak much English, but a few smiles or points and you'll be fine. Usually they call over someone who speaks better English if they can't understand you. Go to the rural areas and you may find it harder, but that can also be part of the fun. :)

Hello Dave!

I am sorry to comment on such an old post, but I didn't want to just comment on some random one. I am thinking about going to Thailand next summer and I was wondering if the language difference makes it harder to get around? This will be my first backpacking trip and I don't want to get in over my head. I only know English, so this limits me a bit. I have heard many good things about Thailand, so I thought this would be a good place to spend my first trip. It's cheap which is nice :) If you still check these posts I would be very glad if you could let me know. Thanks!

Cool! I felt the same way when I was awaiting my trip. I'm glad I can give back to those who kept me inspired. :)

Hi Dave, I've been following your blog via email subscription since just before you left on your adventures, and it's great of course, but I'm especially getting excited now because I fly out from Brisbane to Bangkok on 9th August (3 weeks + 2 days, yay!). My friend & sisters and I plan to live in Saigon & teach English for around 12 months, and on the way we're seeing Thailand, Laos and north + central Vietnam, before settling down in the south. So, keep the details coming! I'm really keen to know exactly what accommodation & sights etc you find to be good, so that Jules & I can follow you through - we're ad-libbing our trip a bit, so we'll have the freedom to make up a lot as we go. Cheers Dave, keep up the great work!
