Writing is one of the those random careers that has no established path. Having some writing experience and a lot of travel experience (especially concentrated experience in single region or country) will probably help to get your foot in the door with a guidebook company. It never hurts to have a contact who already works there and can pass along your resume and a writing sample. Luck, timing and mastery of a foreign language all help too.

I just realized how cranky I sounded... I think this is what happens when I try posting before having my morning coffee...

I guess I need a vacation.

I read this book a couple of months ago. I wasn't impressed - thank goodness it was a gift.

This guy was way too concerned with telling us how cool he was (look at me I sleep with women whose names I don't know, I do drugs, I break rules, look at me). Yet nothing he did or wrote was particularly interesting or exciting or even that dangerous. But that's typical of guys who consider Hunter S. Thompson and Charles Bukowski as their inspiration. They like to talk the talk but very often haven't actually walked the walk.

My two cents.

interesting interview. I just interviewed a travel writer on my site and he said life was nothing like how thomas painted it to be. but that being said, i thought it was a really good book. it was fun to read and very witty.
