Kuta Beach, Bali gave me my first taste of true hawker-fueled frustration when traveling abroad.  On the other hand, I lived off the lessons I learned that first day when traveling throughout the rest of Asia (and later Egypt).

I actually think that’s the way to go. We had India as our first destination and that hardened my bargaining skills and my abilty to get rid of hawkers. The rest of Southeast Asia was a walk in the park after Old Delhi :)
