Isn't it true in France (esp. Paris) that they charge you extra for drinking your beer or drink at a table vs. getting it to go? I heard this and didn't know they did this to me when i was there…but the logic (if true) is so dumb to me. Having one sit and drink means there more likely to buy more which means more money for the store.

Just wondering if this was fact or fiction.

I was just in Paris last December, and I can't for the life of me remember. A difference in cost didn't even occur to me, however I trust Rita knows what she's talking about.

I can't say for cheapest, and I know I'm deviating from the spirit of this post, but the absolute best cup of TEA (okay, deviating again) is at Mariage Frères in the Marais, 4ieme.

I don't think I've ever had a more heavenly brewed cup in my life. Be prepared though, they have about 200 different varieties to choose from, so you might stand in awe for a while deciding. And the tea comes perfectly brewed, so you can pour and enjoy when it comes. + a slice of pie = Divine!

I don't know about take-away, but i guess they would consider that au bar, yes.In that case it would be cheaper.
My (not so educated) guess is that in Paris there are too many young students, tourists etc who wouldn't want to pay too much for a simple beer. or at least thats how the bar see it i guess. also, for certain bars where prices on a beer are average (say no more than 6 euros) then your clientele is pretty much set at the aforementioned crowd. But the thing is there are many people who bar hop (to save money and for fun) and as you know, rea estate is $$$ in paris and they are probably doing this to save money?

Anyway, im curious to see what a real bar owner will tell me.

Tea is good, I love tea actually. I'm not sure I've ever had a cup I could describe as heavenly…nor been to a place with 200 varieties.

i prefer a chinese tea which taste the best and of reasonable price. Mariage Freres is too expensive as compare to its quality (personal view) and i certainly think they put a lot of money in marketing and product outlook design

Hey Rita, thanks a lot for your practical survival tips in Paris! just a little info regarding picnic at pont des art. one can go to buy some food 'nearby' but not really so near (at least 15 min walk), in case u suddenly want to go there and unprepared, just ask people on the street and u will see a supermarket called Monoprix, there's a nice ice-cream shop next to it too and the direction is toward the end of the bridge where the french academy is (please correct my mispelling of the namme, rita). I found it out last time when i was too hungry while waiting my friend who supposingly to bring me food and picnic together, in the end, he was almost 2hr late. But as Rita said, better bring your own food.
