Faces From Around the World: Cuba 002

Mercedes - Havana, Cuba

What is your first name: Mercedes
What city are you from: Havana
What country are you from: Cuba
What do you do: Street performer and tourism.
If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why: Spain because they speak my language there and think it would beautiful.
What’s your dream and why: I dream of good health (75 years old) because I have been sick lately.

FOGG Notes: She was the first person I did a “Faces” interview with in Cuba, and couldn’t help myself.  It’s the all too classic shot, and you can find many ladies in the old city of Havana sitting around with cigars, hoping someone will take a picture of them for some money.  Believe me, you will pay (and I did this time, though I normally don’t pay money directly for interviews), but I just had to get this shot.

My interviews for Cuba were really difficult, as people didn’t know how to answer some of the questions asked. Plus the fact that my friend was helping with the interviews, and it being his first time assisting me on this (which I am very grateful and couldn’t have done it without him), made for very short answers.  I had gotten so used to having my girlfriend assisting me that I took it for granted, and one would think this would be an incentive for me to finally learn some real Spanish.  More then being able to order a beer and ask where the bathroom is.

On a side note: I truly believe these two questions are the most important things to learn first when in a new country, correct me if I’m wrong.

Overall, Cubans seemed to be very hesitant talking about themselves… as if someone was watching them and they would get into trouble.  Hummm…
