Travel bloggers are a unique breed. At some point along our blogs’ online evolution, we write from abroad. If we’ve been in one particular country for a few weeks, we tend to adopt that local currency as our own. This change of thought can easily permeate our writing, leaving readers without a sense of how the foreign currency relates back to their own.
To help readers better relate to one’s financial realities on the road, a currency conversion widget may make a suitable addition to your travel blog. Personal FX, a privately held currency exchange company based in London, has released an easy-to-use widget that will fit just about any blog’s sidebar.
The currency conversion widget features 23 major currencies including the US, Canadian, and Australian Dollars, British Pound, Euro, Thai Baht, and South African Rand.
The styling of the widget can be quickly customized in 3 ways:
- Style (horizontal banner, box, column)
- Color
- Size

Once you’ve modified it to fit the theme of your blog, just hit the “click to get the code” button and a box will appear with the HTML code to copy and paste into your sidebar.
To give you a sense of what the widget looks like in action, you can view it in Go Backpacking’s right sidebar for the next 7 days. It’s incredibly easy to use and install, and I like the fact that it works without having to reload the web page.
My only suggestion for improving it is to provide users access to more currencies. As I’m going to be spending the second half of 2010 in Colombia, the absence of the Peso makes it less relevant to my current situation.
In addition to getting a free widget, you can also visit Personal FX for the latest foreign currency exchange rates or to learn more about paying overseas mortgages with Personal FX Currency Exchange.

This could definitely be useful. It's a shame that it lacks the Peruvian Nuevo Sol.
