Due to historic uprisings in Lhasa before the 2008 Beijing Olympics, I was forced to fly from Chengdu to Kathmandu.
Upon settling into Thamel, the tourist ghetto of Kathmandu, I traded my Lonely Planet China for Nepal at one of the many bookstores. In addition to capturing the trade, a common practice of long term travelers, I took the photo to capture the moment in time, and location.
His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s image graces the cover of Time due to the Chinese crackdown, and the surrounding books about Himalayan adventures are a typical scene in all the Nepali bookshops.

Upon arrival in Kathmandu, I traded my Lonely Planet China for Nepal.
